The 30 Most Famous Paintings in the History of Art
The myths they hide, the history they reveal. From the Mona Lisa to The Scream, thirty pictures everybody knows, and the stories that are usually told about them wrongly.
About the book
It opens on 21 August 1911, the morning a guard at the Louvre found a bare patch of wall where the Mona Lisa should have been. From there the book walks through thirty of the most famous paintings ever made, from Leonardo and Michelangelo to Van Gogh, Munch and Klimt. Each chapter takes one picture and does three things: it tells the myth, sets out what really happened, and explains why it matters.
Why is Napoleon Crossing the Alps a masterpiece of propaganda? What is the real title of Whistler’s Mother? And how did a theft, rather than a brushstroke, make one small portrait the most famous painting on Earth? Short chapters, no jargon, grounded in art history.
Formats: Kindle, paperback, hardcover and audiobook. Published in July 2026.
