The Purpose of Your Life: Carol Adrienne on Synchronicity, Intuition and Finding Your Place in the World

Logic and reason are not always our best allies; sometimes our lives have a meaning beyond our daily worries. The Purpose of Your Life (published in Spanish as Encuentre su meta en la vida) explores the idea that everything happens for a reason.

Coincidences and Premonitions

The book deals with inexplicable, external reasons that can change the course of our lives: premonitions or dreams we later recognise in moments of our lives, ideas that sit in our subconscious and that we later identify in our reality, and the coincidences that human beings always try to explain to themselves.

Real Stories

It includes examples from the lives of different people who followed their intuition and found their purpose in life.

Synchronicity and Collective Intelligence

Concepts such as collective intelligence and synchronicity are explained and presented as things worth bearing in mind in today’s world. The author, who worked with James Redfield on The Celestine Prophecy guides, writes in the same spirit.

Carol Adrienne and The Celestine Prophecy

Carol Adrienne is an American author and counsellor who became known through her collaboration with James Redfield, whose novel The Celestine Prophecy, first self-published in 1993, became a worldwide phenomenon. The novel follows a man’s search for a series of spiritual "insights", the first of which is to take coincidences seriously. Adrienne co-wrote the experiential guides that accompany Redfield’s books, and The Purpose of Your Life develops similar ideas into a practical programme.

What Is Synchronicity?

The term was coined by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, who used it to describe meaningful coincidences: events that seem connected by their meaning rather than by any obvious cause, such as thinking of a friend you have not seen for years just before they call. Jung explored the idea in a famous essay published in the early 1950s. Adrienne invites readers to notice such moments in their own lives and to ask what they might be pointing to.

A Practical Workbook

Beyond the theory, the book is organised as a guide, with exercises, questions and suggestions for reflection designed to help readers look at their life story, recognise recurring patterns and identify the activities and relationships that give them energy. Readers who prefer to work through a book with a notebook beside them will appreciate this approach.

A Word of Balance

Synchronicity is a matter of interpretation, not of science, and sceptical readers will see many of the stories as ordinary coincidences given extra meaning. Read in that light, the book can still be useful: paying closer attention to one’s intuitions, interests and chance encounters is not a bad way to rethink one’s direction in life.

Who Might Benefit

The book suits people going through a transition, such as a change of job, the end of a relationship, retirement or children leaving home, who want to stop and reconsider what matters to them. Its exercises encourage readers to look back over their lives and notice the people, places and chance events that shaped them, a process many find valuable whatever they believe about synchronicity itself.

Related Reading

Readers drawn to these ideas often start with The Celestine Prophecy itself, which presents them in the form of an adventure novel set in Peru; those who want a more rigorous view can go to Jung’s own writings on the subject.

Who Is It For?

Readers at a crossroads who are open to a spiritual, intuitive approach to finding direction.
