Airframe by Michael Crichton: Casey Singleton’s Race to Explain a Deadly In-Flight Incident

Michael Crichton’s Airframe follows the investigation into what happened on board a commercial airliner. A Norton Aircraft N-22 flying from Asia to the United States suffers a violent in-flight incident that leaves passengers dead and injured, and nobody can explain why.

Slats and a Video Tape

During the flight a passenger was filming a family scene, and that footage will later be used to discover what really happened. The engineers explain that this model of aircraft has had mechanical problems with the uncommanded deployment of its slats, but insist that, with all the fixes in place, it is impossible for that to have caused a new accident. Was it human error or mechanical failure?

A Company at Stake

A television news programme is preparing a report that could sink Norton for good and wreck a huge contract with China. So Casey Singleton, the company’s quality-assurance vice president, sets out to find out what happened, keep the story from spiralling and save the company.

Casey Singleton

Casey is a typical Crichton heroine: competent, under pressure and caught between the company she works for and the truth. She has only days to find the cause of the incident, while union disputes, internal politics and a deal with China worth billions hang over her investigation. She must also handle a young executive with ambitions of his own and a television journalist who already knows what story she wants to tell, whatever the facts.

Grounded in Reality

Crichton based the plot on the kind of incidents that really occur in aviation. Uncommanded slat deployment had caused at least one real accident before the book appeared, a 1993 flight on which a wide-body jet suddenly pitched violently, injuring passengers and killing two. As always, he researched his subject in depth, and the novel explains how aircraft are designed, built, tested and investigated, with a level of detail that makes the reader feel like an insider.

A Critique of the Media

Airframe is also a sharp attack on television news. Crichton portrays a programme more interested in drama than accuracy, ready to frighten the public with half-truths about air safety. He argued that air travel is extraordinarily safe and that sensational reporting distorts public understanding of risk, and the novel puts that argument into dramatic form. Readers may not share his scepticism about journalism, but the debate is more relevant than ever.

Michael Crichton

Crichton (1942–2008) trained as a doctor at Harvard before becoming one of the most successful thriller writers of his time, with novels such as The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park and Disclosure. He also created the television series ER. Airframe shows his trademark mix of science, technology and suspense.

Who Will Enjoy It

Anyone who has ever wondered what happens after an in-flight emergency, and fans of procedural thrillers that hinge on technical detective work rather than gunfights.

It is also a good introduction to Crichton for readers who find his science-heavy novels intimidating: the technical material is clearly explained, the cast is small and the plot moves at a brisk pace towards a satisfying, carefully prepared revelation.

Nervous flyers may want to wait until they land.

Its portrait of engineers at work is a highlight of the book.

Why Read It

The cause of the incident seems impossible to establish, until the video tape is analysed and something new comes to light. A story of mystery and suspense that shows how tough the aviation world is; for aviation enthusiasts, it is a delight, packed with technical detail about how airliners are built and investigated.
